We meet the archetype of the messenger in many forms in myths, fairytales and literature. But the ultimate messenger is the Night herself.

The Night was given the power to make us listen, even when we don’t want to. I dissolves into the Night, the silence swallows all names. Now they may speak, the quiet ones we share our minds with.

Messengers can appear intimidating. They represent the unknown that wants to become known. We resent them because the message has the power to transform us, and this can be damaging to the ego.

Beatrice takes over as a guide after Virgil and leads Dante the last leg of his journey from purgatory to heaven in the Divine Comedy.

One interpretation is that she symbolizes going beyond human reason and philosophy, entering the realms of faith and divine grace.
